Nutritional Infusion Therapy
The Meyers Cocktail
The Meyer’s Cocktail is an intravenous vitamin and mineral protocol developed in the 1970′s by a physician John Meyers, M.D. at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. It contains multi-minerals, magnesium, calcium, vitamin C, vitamin B5, vitamin B6, vitamin B12 and vitamin B complex diluted in sterile water. The solution is slowly injected over a 10-20 minute period.
The “cocktail” is indicated for chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, vitamin deficiency, anxiety, stress, depression, migraine or tension headaches, general immune boosting, gut malabsorption, leaky gut and support to cancer patients. It can be useful in situations where oral nutrients or other therapies are not working. When nutrients are given intravenously, your digestive system is bypassed and a much higher level of nutrition can be delivered directly to your cells via the bloodstream.
The nutrients work in your body to help balance and support your system. If you tend to be anxious or overstressed, it can help to calm and relax you. If you tend to have fatigue and feel run down, it can help boost your energy.
There have been many published studies done by Alan Gaby, MD and Jonnathan Wright, M.D. on the benefits and therapeutic use of intravenous nutrients. Depending on the recommendations of your healthcare provider the “cocktail” can be administered once a week, once a month or on an as needed basis.
The Meyer’s has been used to treat fibromyalgia for 20 years. There has been excellent clinical success with the meyers to reduce pain and promote detoxification. Yale researchers recently tested Meyer’s Cocktail on a group of patients in a double-bind, placebo controlled randomized trial. The study measured tender points, depression levels and quality of life. Significant improvement was shown in all pertinent outcome measures with the Meyer’s group and none with the placebo group.
It is best to prepare for the Meyer’s by drinking plenty of water and having food in your stomach before you come in the office. Some patients may experience a general flushing feeling, light-headedness and/or a taste of the vitamins.
